Plumbing and Electrical Repairs

Faucets, sinks, disposals, ceiling fans and electrical repairs done by the licence holder himself.

The drip, the dead outlet, the disposal that only hums

Most of the calls I get for this work start small. A kitchen faucet that drips no matter how hard you turn the handle. A sink basin that has been chipped and stained for years. A bathroom outlet that quit and nobody remembers when. A garbage disposal that hums and does nothing. A ceiling fan that wobbles, or a ceiling with a bare box where a fan was always going to go.

None of it feels like an emergency, which is exactly why it sits on the list for a year. In Indianapolis houses with a few decades on them, the fixtures are usually the first thing to give out: worn washers, corroded supply lines, a switch plate that has been painted over three times. Fixing one of them is a short job. Putting up with it costs more than people expect.

If you are in Broad Ripple, Beech Grove, Greenwood or anywhere else in my service area, call 317-850-6427 and tell me what you are looking at. I will ask a few plain questions before I ever drive over.

Shut off, swap, test, wipe down

On the plumbing side the order never changes. I find the shut-off valves under the sink and close them first. If a valve is stuck or leaks when it is touched, that gets replaced before anything else, because a new faucet on a bad valve is a repair that fails the next week. Then the old fixture comes out, the mounting surface is cleaned down to bare metal or porcelain, and the new faucet or sink goes in with new supply lines. I run water through it, check every connection with a dry paper towel, and check again after it has been running.

A sink replacement is the same thinking with more at stake: the new basin has to match the cutout, sit level on the counter, and seal along the rim so nothing runs behind it. Garbage disposals get a proper mounting assembly and a clean drain connection, and if there is a dishwasher on the same drain I make sure it can still empty.

For electrical repairs and ceiling fans, the breaker goes off first and I confirm the wires are dead with a tester before I touch them. A fan needs a box that is built to carry its weight and its motion, not just a light fixture box, so I check what is in the ceiling before I hang anything. Then the fan is balanced, the blades are tightened, and every wire nut and cover plate is closed up neat. I am the licensed general contractor and I do my own work, so the person who opens the box is the person who closes it.

When the job is bigger than a repair

This page covers repairs and installations: fixtures, devices, fans, disposals, sinks. My license is a general contractor's license with the Indianapolis Metropolitan Plan Commission and Building Authority, and I am not going to stretch that into claims it does not make. Swapping a faucet is one size of job. Re-piping a bathroom or adding circuits to a room is another.

When you call, I will tell you which side of that line your job is on, and I will tell you early. If it is bigger than a repair, we talk about what it really involves before anyone writes an estimate. If it is a repair, you get a free written estimate and a time to do it.

Afterward, the small habits keep it that way: know where your shut-off valves are, run the disposal with cold water, and do not ignore a drip. If a fixture starts acting up again, call the same number.
